Appearing at Town Hall, Tunbridge VT Thursday 3/17/16
I’ll be joining forces with the incredible Starline Rhythm Boys this Saturday, March 19, 7:30pm, at the Tunbridge (VT) Town Hall for “an evening of songs, dance, tall tales and a rollicking good time!”
Danny Coane, Billy Bratcher and Al Lemery have been wowing Vermonters for decades with their rousing blend of honky-tonk, rockabilly and country music. They will be joined by steel guitar player Teddy Webber, a member of the Wiyos. Local craft beer will be provided by my good friends Ben and Ann Linehan of Brocklebank Brewery. Should be a great post-St. Patrick’s Day mud season party.

I’m looking forward to joining Everett Alan Lilly at the Joe Val Festival Saturday, Feb 13, 4:30pm at the Sheraton Framingham Hotel for a celebration by the Boston Bluegrass Union honoring the Lilly Brothers. Everett and Bea Lilly, along with Don Stover and Tex Logan, were the Confederate Mountaineers, the very first Bluegrass Band I ever heard when they were playing on WCOP in Boston in 1952. To say that they changed my life would be an understatement. Their music stirred me as no other music had and hearing it set me on a path which I am still following today. And I wasn’t the only one. Joe Val himself was affected by their music, as was Bill Keith, Peter Rowan and the trio that started Rounder Records–Ken Irwin, Marion Leighton Levy and Bill Nowlin. Indeed, if it weren’t for the Lilly Brothers there might not have been a Boston Bluegrass Union or the Joe Val Festival. I’m honored to be a part of this tribute to them.

Cowboy Poetry gathering in Elko, NV. Looking forward to seeing my cowboy friends there, Paul Zarzyski, Ian Tyson, Don Edwards, Hal Cannon, Tom Russell. Will try not to eat too much of the fabulous Basque food at The Star. Will be celebrating my birthday there a day late, but better late than never!
While in Elko at the Cowboy Poetry gathering, I ran into Mollie O’Brien and Rich Moore, who gave me a copy of their new album “Love Runner”. Get it. Coincidentally it has three songs on it that I have recorded with other artists–“Central Square” by Tom Paxton, “Just Go” by Hal Cannon, and “Green Summertime” by Robin & Linda Williams (which I also recorded with Chris Brashear). It’s one of those albums you can just put on and let it go. Mollie’s voice is a thing of beauty. – J.R.
